Adrian Budhu (he/him/his) is a Consultant at ALJP Consulting. He is a strategic and results-driven executive with over 20 years of experience in enhancing the visibility, performance, and resilience of both nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Combining his passion for social impact with robust business acumen, Adrian adopts a leadership style that embodies listening, accountability, and decisiveness. Learning from the experiences of others, Adrian has refined his leadership methods to effectively connect with a multigenerational, diverse group of individuals in terms of identity and perspective. These attributes have propelled him to success, shaping him into an adaptable and introspective leader. Adrian currently holds the position of Managing Director at Pioneer Theatre Company. He has recently filled the roles of interim Executive Director and Managing Director at The Theater Offensive and East West Players, respectively. Previously, Adrian was the Chief Operating Officer and
Deputy Director at Theatre Communications Group (TCG), a national nonprofit service organization for professional theatre. At TCG, he implemented commitments to equity through measures such as anti-racist hiring practices and departmental realignment to enhance effectiveness and alignment with values. He adeptly managed TCG's operating and grantmaking budget, which ranged from $8 to $10 million, consistently achieving positive cash flow and budget surpluses. Adrian also played a pivotal role in the successful launch and revamp of programs and services, including multimillion-dollar initiatives, flexible work arrangements, hybrid live-virtual events, and a transition to a pay-what-you-wish or free membership and registration model. Before joining TCG, Adrian dedicated five years as Managing Director at The Theater Offensive (TTO), a Boston-based LGBTQ non-profit arts organization. His work significantly boosted TTO's national standing, elevated its community presence, expanded its supporter network, and fortified its sustainability by eliminating debt, more than doubling its revenue, and growing its cash reserves. Adrian's diverse professional background spans several sectors, including the GLBTQ Domestic Violence Project, XAMonline.com, Metro Boston newspaper, and John Hancock Financial. His insights on leadership, decision making, culture, and programming have been featured in American Theatre magazine, and he has shared his expertise at numerous conferences and seminars. Moreover, he has received multiple accolades for his leadership and advocacy efforts. Adrian's previous associations encompass the Boston Cultural Change Network, dedicated to social justice through arts and culture; the Boston Creates Leadership Council, where he provided guidance and supported the city's cultural plan; the board of directors for TCG; and the national board of directors for the Point Foundation. Additionally, Adrian has been a panelist for the National Endowment for the
Arts in theater and musical theater grants, as well as for TCG's A-ha! program. He earned a B.S. in
Management Studies from Boston University and has pursued further training in fundraising, along with
a Harvard Business School Online Certificate in Disruptive Strategy.
